No fewer than three ministers in the administration of Bola Tinubu have resigned ahead of the March 31 deadline for political appointees seeking elective office in the 2027 general elections.

The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by George Akume, requires all affected officials to step down before participating in party primaries.

The order aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to a circular signed by Akume and issued by Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana, the directive applies to ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, and heads of federal agencies.

With hours to the deadline, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu; and the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, all resigned.

Tuggar, who is expected to contest the Bauchi governorship election, announced his resignation on Monday, thanking the president for the opportunity to serve and highlighting achievements in strengthening Nigeria’s global partnerships.

Sununu also stepped down to pursue political ambitions in Kebbi State, noting that his decision complies with electoral regulations.

Alkali followed suit on Tuesday, expressing appreciation for the chance to contribute to the transportation sector. He is expected to join the Gombe governorship race.

Meanwhile, confusion trailed reports that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had resigned to contest the Oyo governorship election.

However, his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, dismissed the viral letter as fake, insisting Adelabu remains in office.
