African countries are increasingly turning to the Dangote Refinery as fuel shortages deepen following supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.
A new report by Bloomberg reveals that countries including Ghana, South Africa and Kenya are exploring petroleum imports from the Lagos-based facility owned by Aliko Dangote.
The shift comes as many African nations struggle with reduced fuel supplies traditionally sourced from large refineries in the Persian Gulf, now affected by ongoing regional conflict.
According to the report, the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery — one of the largest in the world — has become a critical alternative supplier. The $20 billion project, which began operations in 2024 after years of delays and cost overruns, is still ramping up production.
The development marks a major turning point for Nigeria, ending its long-standing reliance on exporting crude oil for refining abroad and re-importing finished products at higher costs.
Despite rising regional demand, a significant portion of the refinery’s output will still be consumed domestically. Bloomberg estimates that about three-quarters of production will serve Nigeria’s internal fuel needs, leaving limited volumes available for export.
Nevertheless, interest from across the continent continues to grow. Sources say several African governments and companies have already signalled intentions to secure supply agreements with the refinery.
However, the report cautions that the Dangote refinery alone cannot fully bridge Africa’s fuel supply gap. Many countries also lack sufficient strategic reserves to cushion prolonged shortages.
Some nations are already taking precautionary measures. For instance, Ethiopia has urged citizens to conserve fuel while prioritising public transport, and South African firms are preparing contingency plans to sustain operations.
Analysts say the scramble for fuel could significantly boost Dangote’s revenues, positioning the refinery as a key player in Africa’s energy security landscape.
