The Federal Government has introduced a “fly now, pay later” scheme aimed at making domestic air travel more affordable for Nigerians.
The initiative, unveiled by the Federal Government of Nigeria, is designed to allow passengers book flights and pay in instalments rather than upfront.
Officials say the scheme is part of broader efforts to ease financial pressure on travellers and stimulate growth in the aviation sector, which has been grappling with high ticket prices and fluctuating demand.
Under the arrangement, passengers can secure tickets on participating airlines and spread payments over a specified period, subject to agreed terms and conditions.
The government noted that rising operational costs, including aviation fuel and foreign exchange constraints, have contributed to the surge in ticket prices, making air travel less accessible to many Nigerians.
Industry stakeholders believe the flexible payment model could increase passenger traffic and improve airline revenues, especially on domestic routes.
However, experts also caution that the success of the scheme will depend on transparent terms, interest rates, and effective partnerships between airlines and financial service providers.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the affordability of air travel in Nigeria, with some routes experiencing significant fare hikes in recent months.
Authorities say further details, including participating airlines and payment structures, will be released in due course.
