President Bola Tinubu has approved the nomination of Lamido Yuguda as a deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The president said the nomination aligns with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.

“Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the erstwhile deputy governor, Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy,” the statement reads.

“The president charges them to discharge their responsibilities with renewed dedication, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth in their respective roles.”

Before his latest nomination, Yuguda served as the director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC), his last public position, which he held from 2020 to 2024.

He was confirmed by the Senate as SEC DG on June 10, 2020.

“He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, where he graduated in 1983 with a BSc in Accountancy,” the presidency added.

“In 1991, he obtained a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.”

The economist is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a charterholder of the CFA Institute.

Yuguda began his career at the CBN in 1984 as a senior supervisor in the foreign operations department. He later worked as an economist in the Africa department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1997 to 2001 before returning to the apex bank.

He retired from the CBN in 2016 after serving as director of the reserve management department for six years.

On February 22, 2024, Yuguda was confirmed alongside 12 others as members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the CBN.
