President Bola Tinubu has decorated Tunji Disu, the newly appointed acting inspector-general of police (IGP) with his new rank.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the State House in FCT-Abuja,

Chronicle NG had reported that Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu, who previously served as an assistant inspector-general of police, described his elevation as an honour rooted in his commitment to policing and national service.

Speaking after the decoration ceremony, he said the appointment reflected his long-standing dedication to the police profession and the country.

He expressed appreciation to the president for the confidence shown in him, noting that remarks made during the ceremony were emotionally significant.

Disu said references by Tinubu to his professional record and past assignments demonstrated close attention to the performance of security officers nationwide.

According to him, the president’s comments also served as a challenge to improve policing in the country, particularly in areas relating to peacebuilding and public safety.

The acting IGP noted that building stronger cooperation between police officers and the public would be central to his leadership strategy.

“It shows the president took his time to monitor officers working everywhere in the country,” he said.

“It also shows that the president was throwing a challenge at me to go out there and do what I’m known for; and ensure that I bring peace and recognition to country. Top priority for Nigeria.

“In one of the first lectures with my men, I’m going to talk to them, let them know that the citizens of the country are the boss.”

Disu promised a leadership approach anchored on strict anti-corruption discipline and respect for the rule of law within the force.

“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train and encourage them to ensure they follow human rights,” he added.

“I will ensure that they know that I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance to corruption, and most importantly, I’m going to drum it into them that we can never succeed without the cooperation of members of the public.

“I will mention that the country is facing a particular problem, the issue of banditry and insurgency. I know all police officers have been doing their best.

“They are hardworking people. All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make anything better.”
