Bodo/Glimt rallied to secure a remarkable win over Atletico Madrid, advancing to the Champions League knockout stage play-offs.

The Norwegian champions—who defeated Manchester City 3-1 a week ago—concluded the league stage in 23rd position and will engage in a two-legged matchup for a spot in the last 16 next month, alongside Atletico, who finished nine positions above after eight matches.

The La Liga team seemed set for a top-eight spot when Alexander Sorloth rose highest to nod David Hancko’s cross beyond Nikita Haikin in the 15th minute.

Nonetheless, Bodo/Glimt—the first Norwegian team to advance from the league or group stage in the Champions League since Rosenborg in 1996-97—equalized 19 minutes later when defender Fredrik Sjovold scored from a short distance following a precise cutback from Fredrik Andre Bjorkan.

The critical goal arrived in the 59th minute when striker Kasper Waarts Hogh seized on a scramble in front of the net to nudge the ball past Jan Oblak, securing his team’s first away victory in the tournament.

Bodo/Glimt will encounter either Inter Milan or Real Madrid, whereas Atletico will match up against either Galatasaray or Club Brugge.

Each side will know their opponent when the draw takes place on Friday.
