The Ogun State Police Command has detained one suspect in connection with the death of popular artist Adesina Afeez, aka Destiny Boy.
According to the command, the matter has been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide Section for further investigation.
In a statement on Monday, the command Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said, “The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.”
Destiny Boy’s death was announced on Sunday after sad videos of his body being transported to a mortuary circulated widely on social media, provoking grief and debate about the cause of death.
In one of the videos, the artist was seen sleeping in the back of a car, cotton wool stuffed into his nostrils and ears.
An unidentified associate later attempted to clarify the circumstances behind his death in a different video, claiming that the artist was dealing with a private health issue.
“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. May God rest his soul. Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the man said.
Destiny Boy, born Afeez Adeshina, began his musical career at a young age and rose to prominence with his Fuji-infused style. He got his start at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, where he was a backup dancer for Fuji musician Pasuma.
He soared to notoriety in 2019 after sharing a Fuji cover of Davido’s smash song. If, which went viral on social media. He has released cover versions of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.
The singer released various singles, including Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey.
Destiny Boy and his partner, Iremide, had their first kid in November 2024.
The police stated more updates would be supplied as the investigation progressed.
