Marcus Rashford came off the bench and netted for Barcelona, but the La Liga leaders were defeated in a thrilling match against Real Sociedad.
The England striker leveled the score with a header in the 70th minute in San Sebastian—marking his eighth goal in total since arriving on loan from Manchester United—to negate Mikel Oyarzabal’s volley.
However, Barcelona were equal for under a minute before Goncalo Guedes netted the decisive goal.
In a thrilling match, Barcelona received a penalty that was later revoked and had three goals ruled out, while Dani Olmo struck the post on two occasions.
Fermin Lopez, Frenkie de Jong, and Lamine Yamal each had their goals disallowed for offside in the first half-hour, until Sociedad’s captain Oyarzabal scored with a brilliant finish in the 32nd minute.
A lot more drama was yet to come.
Barcelona believed they had earned a penalty during the closing moments of the first half when 18-year-old Lamine Yamal fell after being challenged by Igor Zubeldia.
The referee indicated the penalty spot, but following a VAR review, the decision was reversed due to a different offside.
Following Olmo’s attempts that struck the post in the 47th and 49th minutes, Barcelona substitute Robert Lewandowski saw his header deflected onto the bar by goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
The visitors equalized when Rashford struck seven minutes after his entrance, but Sociedad quickly regained the lead through Guedes.
Barcelona had another chance to strike the woodwork, as Jules Kounde’s header in the 85th minute ricocheted off the bar.
Sociedad ended with 10 players after Carlos Soler received a straight red card for a late tackle on Pedri in the 88th minute, yet endured nine extra minutes to defeat Barcelona at home for the second consecutive season.
Barca’s third league loss of the season leaves them with 49 points from 20 matches, just one point ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, while Sociedad has risen to eighth.
