Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar has paid respect to fallen soldiers and serving members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, applauding their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the country’s unity and security.
According to a post on his verified X handle on Thursday commemorating Armed Forces Memory Day, Atiku and his family joined millions of Nigerians in sad memory of military personnel killed in the line of duty.
“Today, my family and I join millions of Nigerians in solemn remembrance and deep gratitude to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces,” he said.
The former vice president also honored warriors who sacrificed what he regarded as the ultimate sacrifice in national defense, as well as those who are presently serving around the country.
“We honor those who paid the supreme sacrifice in defense of our nation, and we salute those who continue to serve with courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and unity of our country,” he stated.
Atiku stated that the selflessness and perseverance of personnel of the Armed Forces served as a continual reminder that Nigeria’s liberties were gained through their dedication and patriotism.
He also extended gratitude to active and former military members for their service and sacrifices for the country.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is commemorated yearly on January 15 to honor personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces who perished in the two World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and numerous peacekeeping and internal security missions.
Wreath-laying ceremonies, military parades, and the sounding of the Last Post are held around the country to commemorate the day.
The yearly event also provides an occasion to recognize serving officers and veterans for their contributions to maintaining Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting peacekeeping efforts both domestically and overseas.
