President Bola Tinubu has expressed great sorrow over the death of Akran of Badagry, Oba Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, also known as Babatunde Akran, who died on Monday at the age of 89.

Tinubu, in a condolence message issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed his condolences to the Lagos State government and people, describing the late monarch as a visionary traditional ruler whose reign was marked by unity, tolerance, and purposeful leadership.

Tinubu expressed condolences to the Lagos State Traditional Council, the Badagry Council of Chiefs, and the Badagry Kingdom’s sons and daughters.

The late monarch led the Badagry Kingdom for four decades, promoting peace, harmony, and prosperity among his people.

“President Tinubu affirms that the traditional ruler provided visionary and purposeful leadership over his domain for more than 40 years, leaving a track record of harmony, tolerance, unity, and prosperity among his people,” the statement partly read.

Tinubu also acknowledged the late monarch’s role in safeguarding Badagry’s historical and cultural identity, noting his contributions to preserving the town’s global heritage.

“The President notes the efforts of Oba Babatunde in protecting, preserving, and projecting the historical significance of Badagry Kingdom, a former slave harbor and route, and the rich cultural heritage that continues to attract global attention,” the statement added.

The president also praised the wisdom of the late ruler and his council in navigating the complexities of leadership in a multicultural society while balancing tradition with modern governance.

“President Tinubu acknowledges the wisdom of the late traditional ruler and his council in maintaining a balance between modernity and tradition, managing multicultural interests, and ensuring the sanctity of various cultural icons for posterity,” the statement continued.

Reflecting on the monarch’s personal journey, the president urged Nigerians to recognize Oba Babatunde’s legacy, which included education and journalism before ascending to the throne.

“The President urges an appreciation of the legacy of Oba Babatunde, who worked as a teacher for many years before venturing into journalism, where he made an impact while holding positions at West African Pilot, Post Group of Newspapers, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria,” the statement added.

The president concluded by offering prayers for the repose of the soul of the departed monarch and comfort for his family and the people of Badagry.

Chronicle NG reports that the monarch was a highly respected traditional ruler and a prominent voice within Lagos State’s traditional institution, whose reign spanned more than four decades.

He ruled on the throne of the ancient town for over 48 years before his demise, reportedly after a brief illness on Monday.
