Former presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, praised the Super Eagles after they defeated Algeria 2-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals in Marrakech, Morocco.

On Saturday, Atiku lauded the team’s performance and battling spirit, claiming that it had lifted the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

He wrote, “A proud night for our nation. I celebrate the Super Eagles on their solid 2–0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON quarter-final.

“Your fighting spirit has once again lifted the hopes of millions of Nigerians. Keep soaring; we are firmly behind you.”

The Super Eagles secured a convincing win over Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech to book a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

The win sets up a last-four clash against hosts Morocco, who defeated Cameroon in their quarter-final encounter.

Nigeria entered the match on the back of a strong 4-0 victory against Mozambique in the Round of 16, having scored 12 goals in four matches—the most in the competition.

Algeria, who were unbeaten into the quarterfinals, had conceded only one goal in four games and were known for their strong defensive organization.

From the start, the Super Eagles controlled possession and pressed high, forcing Algeria to defend deep.

Victor Osimhen led the assault with quickness and strength, assisted by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi controlled play in midfield.

Nigeria had many chances in the first half, with Akor Adams wasting a one-on-one opportunity and another being cleared off the line.

Despite Nigeria’s domination, Algeria remained compact and sought opportunities on the counterattack, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane making crucial stops to keep his team in the match.

The breakthrough came in the second half, when Osimhen scored a header to put Nigeria ahead.

The Super Eagles kept control, as Akor Adams doubled his lead after being set up by Osimhen, securing a comfortable win.

The Super Eagles will now meet Morocco in the semi-finals as they seek continental gold.
