President Bola Tinubu has praised the Senate for quickly confirming General Christopher Musa (retd.) as the new Minister of Defence, hailing the appointment as timely and critical for the country.

Tinubu stated in a post on his official X on Thursday that he transmitted Musa’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation two days ago.

He spoke of the former Chief of Defence Staff as “a fine gentleman” whose leadership will be critical in tackling the country’s present security issues.

He wrote, “Two days ago, I transmitted the name of General Christopher G. Musa, our immediate past Chief of Defence Staff and a fine gentleman, to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation as the Federal Minister of Defence.

“I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday. His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a nation.

“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Chronicle NG reports that the Senate, on Wednesday, confirmed Musa as Minister of Defence after a rigorous five-hour screening session.

During the screening, MPs questioned the former CDS on recent security breaches, including the contentious pullout of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, just before schoolgirls were abducted on November 17.

Musa informed the Senate that upon taking office, he would “immediately set up a full-scale investigation” into the troop departure.

The former defense chief also promised to investigate the killing of Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba in Borno State, as well as other attacks on top military leaders.

His appointment comes after former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru resigned, purportedly for health reasons.
