Phil Foden scored twice as Manchester City regained ground in the Premier League title chase after nearly losing a two-goal lead against struggling Leeds.

The result takes City into second place in the table after Saturday’s 3pm kick-offs, four points behind leaders Arsenal, while Leeds suffers their sixth defeat in seven top-flight games.

However, it was far from an easy victory when Foden scored the first of his two goals with only 59 seconds remaining.

City were in complete control after the England international converted Matheus Nunes’ cross, and Josko Gvardiol increased their lead in the 25th minute.

And, against a Leeds team that seemed incapable of maintaining the ball long enough to launch a real attack, Daniel Farke’s side appeared to be in damage-limitation mode.

Only some great goalkeeping from Lucas Perri, who complained about being impeded in the buildup to Gvardiol’s goal, kept the visitors in the game.

After the break, Leeds were spurred by the introduction of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who prodded home after Nunes diverted the ball into his path.

Lukas Nmecha converted his second penalty attempt after Calvert-Lewin was fouled by City’s Croatian center-back Gvardiol, giving the visitors hope for an improbable first away win since September 20.

However, on a day when Erling Haaland was forced to wait for his 100th Premier League goal, Foden came to City’s rescue with a flawless left-foot finish into the bottom left corner in stoppage time.
