Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) has confirmed receiving an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, assuring Nigerians that he is willing to appear before the anti-graft agency.

Malami announced this in a post on his personal Facebook page on Friday, declaring himself as a law-abiding citizen dedicated to accountability and openness in government.

“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honor the invitation,” he wrote.

He explained that his choice to publicly announce the development was in line with his long-standing commitment to transparency and good governance.

“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service—principles that I both advocate and champion,” he added, noting that he would keep the public informed as events unfold.

Malami was Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice from 2015 until 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

During his tenure, he oversaw various high-profile legal challenges, including as asset recovery initiatives, anti-corruption reforms, and disputed government judgments that gained national and worldwide attention.

He was also a key player in big financial crimes, international arbitration battles, and governance changes.

In the later years of his term, Malami received public scrutiny over concerns relating to asset declarations, contract approvals, and the administration of recovered funds—allegations he constantly denied.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not disclosed the substance or breadth of its invitation to the former attorney-general.
