Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday, announced his determination “to combat all forms of election rigging, including the menace of vote-buying.”

This, he claimed, had become non-negotiable since “the eyes of the nation are upon us.” The public’s trust in INEC is precious.”

Amupitan, who took over leadership of INEC in October, made the vow when swearing in Prof. Adeniran Tella as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State.

The ceremony, held at the commission’s headquarters, commemorated Tella’s relocation to Oyo as part of INEC’s continuous efforts to strengthen election administration throughout the country.

In his speech, Amupitan underlined the gravity of the situation, calling it “a solemn occasion; an occasion of call to duty.”

“This is a profound responsibility, placing you at the forefront of Nigeria’s democratic journey in one of our states.”

Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to credible elections, stating, “The credibility of our electoral system is the very foundation on which our democracy stands.”

“Your role as a Resident Electoral Commissioner is absolutely critical to the success of this democratic project. I must be unequivocal, and I admonish you that the integrity of our elections is non-negotiable.”

The INEC chairman also warned against compromising INEC’s procedures and values.

“Your role as a Resident Electoral Commissioner is absolutely critical to the success of this democratic project. I must be unequivocal, and I admonish you that the integrity of our elections is non-negotiable.”

Amupitan also warned against compromising INEC’s procedures and values.

Tella responded to the charge by promising to connect his efforts with the commission’s vision and praising Amupitan for his assistance.

“The honorable chairman’s remarks are very much brimming with value and experience,” he further added.

Tella, a professor of strategic management and public policy, is currently the deputy dean of the Faculty of Arts, Social, and Management Sciences at Oyo’s Atiba University.

He previously served as REC in both Oyo and Ekiti states, representing Osun, and his first term ends in September 2025.
