DR Congo stun Nigeria to reach World Cup intercontinental playoffs

Nigeria fail to qualify for second consecutive World Cup after losing to DR Congo

DR Congo clawed back from an early blow to dump Nigeria out of the World Cup race, winning 4–3 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw in Rabat and booking their spot in March’s intercontinental playoffs.

Nigeria made a dream start, striking inside three minutes when Frank Onyeka pounced on a loose ball and fired home via a deflection past Lionel Mpasi. But DR Congo grew into the contest and equalised on 32 minutes, with Elia deftly lifting the ball over Stanley Nwabali after Cedric Bakambu’s cross ricocheted kindly into his path.

The second half and extra time were cagey, with chances at a premium. DR Congo twice had the ball in the net, only for both efforts to be chalked off. Nigeria, who made six substitutions—including withdrawing Victor Osimhen at half-time—never found their attacking flow again.

The shootout delivered high drama. Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed early for Nigeria, while Samuel Moutoussamy failed to convert for DR Congo. The momentum swung when substitute goalkeeper Dimitry Fayulu saved Semi Ajayi’s kick, leaving captain Chancel Mbemba to finish the job. He made no mistake, sparking wild Congolese celebrations.

DR Congo now move on to face a yet-to-be-determined opponent for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
