The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly debunked claims that Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary cancellation was linked to an alleged coup plot within the military.

In a statement released on Saturday, Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, explained that the federal government called off the October 1 parade to allow President Bola Tinubu attend a crucial bilateral meeting abroad. He added that the move also enabled security forces to sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry nationwide.

Gusau dismissed a viral report alleging that sixteen officers had been arrested over a coup attempt. He clarified that the officers were instead being investigated internally for professional misconduct, describing it as part of the military’s routine disciplinary process.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to categorically state that the claims by the said publication are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace,” the statement read.

He assured Nigerians that the investigation was purely internal and aimed at maintaining discipline and professionalism within the ranks. An investigative panel has been set up, and its findings will be made public.

Gusau urged citizens to support security agencies, stressing that the armed forces remain loyal to the constitution and the federal government under President Tinubu.

“Democracy is forever,” he declared, urging Nigerians to ignore falsehoods spread by “purveyors of misinformation and enemies of our nation.”
