Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, has expressed profound sadness over the death of seasoned evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai.

In a post via X on Monday, Obi described Ukpai as one of Nigeria’s most esteemed clerics, noting his lifelong dedication to preaching the Gospel, healing, and uplifting souls across the country and beyond.

Dr. Ukpai, who died at age 80, was an international evangelist, leader of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and founder of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).

Born in the small town of Asaga, Ohafia, in Abia State, Evangelist Ukpai went through his paces, enduring challenges while passing through school. But God had his purpose well defined. He obeyed the divine call and impacted generations with his ministry.

“I have just received with deep sadness the news of the passing on to glory of one of Nigeria’s most revered clerics, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, Founder and President of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association,” Obi wrote.

“Through the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, he organized large-scale crusades, healing services, and leadership conferences that brought hope and transformation to countless lives.”

Obi, the ex-Anambra governor extended his condolences to Ukpai’s family, friends, and congregation, praying for God’s peace and comfort during this difficult time.

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” he prayed.

Ukpai’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement titled “Glorious Transition.”

“He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity.
