The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) said it rescued a 16-year-old domestic worker after her employer allegedly bathed her with hot water in the Gwarinpa area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Friday, NAPTIP revealed that the employer’s neighbors had provided the information that led to the rescue.
The statement claims that neighbors who saw the assault took the 16-year-old, who was hired to look after the employer’s three children, to a hospital.
The statement read, “The victim, who hails from Imo State and comes from a family of 12, had been caring for her employer’s three children, including two-month-old twins and a seven-year-old boy while the employer worked at night.
“Reports indicate that the girl was scalded with hot water by her employer.
“Alert neighbors quickly rushed her to a hospital and immediately contacted NAPTIP, prompting a swift rescue operation.”
NAPTIP mentioned that it has commenced an investigation into the incident, adding that “all individuals involved in this heinous act will face the full weight of the law.”
This is one of countless instances of domestic violence involving the use of hot water.
In February 2022, a lady named Ramota Soliu killed her husband, Bello Soliu, at a Fulani village in the Iyana Ilewo region of the Abeokuta-North Local Government region in Ogun State.
Ramota, a mother of two, reportedly threw hot water on her husband, resulting in his death.
In the same vein, in September 2023, a landlord named Michael allegedly threw hot water on an 11-year-old child named Princess in Mowe, Ogun State.
