The immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, is currently being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.

According to anonymous sources within the anti-graft agency, Kyari is currently at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

“He is here with our investigators at the moment. This is all I can confirm for now,” one of the sources said.

Kyari was reportedly asked by the committee to clarify financial activities while he was in charge of the state-owned oil business.

The development comes amid continuing investigations into alleged irregularities in the management of billions of funds set aside for Nigeria’s struggling refineries.

Kyari had already been placed on the EFCC’s watchlist in connection with a $7.2 billion refinery turnaround repair project.
