Liverpool are set to smash the British transfer record after agreeing a deal worth £130 million to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, according to multiple reports on Monday.

The Swedish striker will undergo a medical before completing a six-year contract with the Merseyside club, The Athletic reported.

The deal eclipses the £106 million fee Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023, setting a new Premier League benchmark.

Isak, 25, enjoyed a prolific season last year, scoring 23 Premier League goals – second only to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah – as Newcastle secured Champions League qualification.

His departure follows a turbulent transfer saga. The forward had been training away from the main Newcastle squad after expressing his determination to move to Liverpool. Newcastle initially rejected a £110 million bid earlier this summer but softened their stance after signing German international Nick Woltemade for up to £69 million.

Liverpool, who lifted the Premier League title last season, have already reinforced their squad with high-profile arrivals. Florian Wirtz joined in a blockbuster move, alongside Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

For Newcastle, manager Eddie Howe admitted last Friday that a sale might be necessary due to financial constraints: “The impact a sale would have on Newcastle’s profit and sustainability calculations” was a factor. The club narrowly avoided a points deduction last season by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Despite the big-name signings, Liverpool’s early-season performances have not yet matched the dominance of last year. However, they remain top of the table with three wins from three, including a narrow 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, sit 17th after being held to a goalless draw by Leeds United.
