President Bola Tinubu has approved a policy that will grant lifelong salary benefits to top officers retiring from the ranks of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The initiative, which will significantly improve the welfare of officers, was announced by Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior.

The minister stated this on Thursday, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, when he reviewed the ministry’s accomplishments and reaffirmed its commitment to improving institutional performance and capacity across all agencies.

This is stated in a statement signed by NPRO/Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, on Thursday after the retreat.

He expressed the minister’s gratitude for the president’s support.

“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.

“We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” Tunji-Ojo stated, noting that over 50,000 officers have been promoted within the last two years alone.

He stressed that in the future, officer advancement will be determined by a new system based on capability and performance.

Tunji-Ojo indicated that new training manuals have been prepared and that development of a world-class Fire Academy is ongoing, in keeping with the ministry’s focus on institutional enhancement.

The programme is being designed to compete with top international universities like the Arizona Fire programme.

The minister also emphasised the importance of mental health in the workplace, assuring officers that the ministry will provide full support in this crucial area.

He also directed the Federal Fire Service to form partnerships with the corporate sector, emphasising the importance of such collaboration in improving service delivery, infrastructure development, and the modernisation of Nigeria’s firefighting operations.
