Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has gifted N5 million and plots of land to the families of Kano athletes who died in an auto accident while returning from the National Sports Festival (NSF) in May 2025.

In a statement on Thursday, Ibrahim Adam, media aide to the governor, added that other athletes injured during the incident will also get N2 million and a plot of land each.

On May 31, 22 athletes, who represented Kano at the 22nd NSF in Ogun, died after their team’s bus was involved in an accident.

The vehicle the victims were in flipped off the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura LGA of the state. Several others were injured in the accident.

According to Adam, the governor described the athletes as “heroes of Kano” and emphasised the state’s commitment to honouring their memory.

“The Governor listened to the families with compassion and immediately directed that all donations collected for them be disbursed without delay,” the statement reads.

“This is the Governor’s personal commitment to ensuring that these families are not forgotten.”

In June, Remi Tinubu also donated N110 million to the families of the dead athletes.

The 22nd National Sports Festival was held in Ogun from May 18 to 30. Kano finished 13th on the medals table with 29 medals, including six gold.
