The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced new appointments to key positions in the party’s national working committee (NWC), following a zoning realignment approved at Thursday’s meeting of the national executive committee (NEC) held in Abuja.

Abdulkarim Kana, a former national legal adviser, is now the party’s deputy national secretary, while Murtala Kogiya from Katsina state will serve as the new national legal adviser.

The changes were part of a motion moved by Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, who said the adjustments reflected the party’s commitment to fairness and internal equity.

“It will be a thing of joy for me to take advantage of this moment to drive this composite motion,” Uzodimma said while addressing NEC members.

He moved that the office of the national legal adviser be zoned from the north-central to the north-west geopolitical zone, while the deputy national secretary position, already zoned to the north-central, should remain in the region.

The motion also included a call for the extension of the tenure of ward, LG, state, and zonal executives of the party until December 31, 2025, citing the compressed political calendar and the need for stability.

“I so move,” Uzodimma declared, before inviting Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, to second the motion.

Abbas endorsed the proposal, saying, “I hereby second the following motions… including the filling of offices of the deputy national secretary and the national legal adviser in accordance with the new zoning arrangements”.

The appointments followed the earlier appointment of Nentawe Yilwatda, former APC governorship candidate in Plateau, as the party’s new national chairman—a position now zoned to the north-central region.
