    US warns citizens to avoid military, government sites in Abuja

    The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh security alert urging American citizens to steer clear of military and government installations in Abuja unless absolutely necessary, citing rising global security threats.

    According to a statement released by the United States Embassy on Monday, all embassy staff and their families have been instructed not to visit military or government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory unless for official reasons.

    This advisory, triggered by unspecified global developments, has led to reinforced security protocols and a reassessment of movements around sensitive government locations in the Nigerian capital.

    The embassy’s statement read in part:
    “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.”

    In addition, US nationals residing in or visiting Nigeria were advised to take heightened precautions in public spaces, especially in areas commonly frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and officials.

    “Actions to take: Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent.

    “Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”

    Despite the security restrictions, the Consular Sections in both Abuja and Lagos remain fully operational.

    The embassy has encouraged US citizens needing further information or assistance to consult its official website.
