Chelsea sealed a return to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year absence, edging Nottingham Forest 1-0 in a tense Premier League showdown at the City Ground.

The result confirms a top-four finish for Enzo Maresca’s men, while Forest must settle for a UEFA Conference League place.

In front of a raucous home crowd, Forest knew only a win would keep their Champions League hopes alive. Chelsea, equally aware that any slip-up could cost them the coveted fifth UCL spot, approached the match with caution.

The early stages saw Forest pressing with energy, but without testing Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. Despite promising buildup, neither side created much threat in a cagey first half, with Pedro Neto’s miscued effort the closest either came to scoring.

Momentum shifted after the break. A misjudged header from Forest’s Neco Williams handed Chelsea the breakthrough, as Neto pounced and squared for Levi Colwill to slot home from close range.

With their European ambitions hanging by a thread, Forest pushed forward. But Chelsea’s disciplined defence held firm, limiting the hosts to speculative efforts, including a late attempt from Chris Wood that flew wide under pressure.

The final whistle confirmed the visitor’s Champions League return and capped off a strong finish to the season, with five wins from their last six league games.

Maresca, in his first year at the helm, now prepares for Wednesday’s UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis Balompié.
