Miss Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old student at Federal University Wukari in Taraba State, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified police officers at the Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi.

According to an eyewitness, the 200-level business management student was killed Friday morning by the officers on duty at the famous Wurukum roundabout who opened fire on the vehicle transporting her from the Gyado Villa district of town.

According to the witness, “The girl and a young male driver were in the vehicle around 7:30 a.m. when the incident happened.

“They were driving from the Gyado Villa part of the town and got to Wurukum when police personnel at the checkpoint suddenly flagged down the Toyota car they were driving in, and when the boy driving the vehicle couldn’t stop the vehicle, the police personnel allegedly opened fire on the car.

“Sadly, the girl was hit by a bullet. She was rushed to the hospital; unfortunately, she died from the bullet wound after losing so much blood.”

According to reports, the event has already sparked tension in Makurdi, with many organisations and civil society organisations (CSOs) threatening large protests if justice is not served and the police officers guilty are brought to justice.

Ukan Kurugh, a gender rights activist, responded by warning that Makurdi could be placed under lockdown starting next Tuesday if the State Police Command fails to handle the situation properly.

Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer and Chief Superintendent of CSP, was unavailable for comment.
