The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano State, has ordered the immediate closure of Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels on Hotoro and UDB Road in Kano due to safety and disciplinary concerns.

Dr Hamza Garba, the university’s Vice President for Campus Life, made the announcement in a statement posted on Monday.

Following reports of infractions of its code of conduct, the university withdrew its approval for the hostelsusage.

According to the statement, the decision was made as part of MAAUN’s efforts to ensure that its students have safe, secure, and morally upright accommodations in their hostels in Kano.

“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro,” the statement read.

Garba stated that the hostels failed to comply with university norms regarding the administration of private student lodgings.

He stated that noncompliance had resulted in a number of breaches, including documented examples of immoral behaviour, inadequate water and energy delivery, student violence, unlawful nighttime mobility, and the sharing of facilities with unknown tenants.

“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” he said.

The university, therefore, advised all affected students to quit the dormitories immediately following the conclusion of the current semester examinations and warned them against further association with the facilities for their own safety and security.

“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure total compliance with the directive,” the statement added.

Students and parents were urged to contact the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life, at vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng for information on approved and secure dormitory options.

The institution further said that it would not accept responsibility for any consequences resulting from noncompliance with the mandate.
