Three suspects in the kidnapping of Nigerian Navy Lieutenant Cynthia Akor have been apprehended by Naval Unit operatives in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Two of the arrested were directly involved in the abduction, and the third was recognised as an accomplice.

It was gathered on Thursday that the arrests were made in a village near Masaka in neighbouring Nasarawa State.

On March 21, armed assailants stormed Maman Vatsa Estate’s gate, barricaded Mpape Road, and opened fire on moving vehicles, kidnapping Akor and two bystanders.

Akor’s kidnappers later contacted their relatives, demanding N500 million for the naval commander and N200 million for each civilian.

Akor and other victims were eventually rescued thanks to a coordinated security operation comprising the Federal Capital Territory Police Command and the military.

While handing over the suspects to the police, the Commander of the Naval Unit, Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, stated that the arrests were made possible by efficient collaboration among security forces in the FCT.

“The suspects have since confessed to their involvement in kidnapping, cattle rustling, and other criminal activities.

“Accordingly, the suspects and the related exhibits have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force (FCT Command) for further investigation and prosecution,“ he said.

Despite the successful operation, Oladipo stated that Abuja still faces security concerns such as kidnapping, “one chance” abductions, and vehicle theft.

He emphasised the Navy’s commitment to advancing the vision of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff, by contributing to national security on land and sea.

“We are also deeply appreciative of the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for his leadership in enhancing security for the development of the FCT.

“The base will continue to operate in partnership with other security agencies to keep the FCT safe and secure,“ Oladipo said.
