The Lagos State Government has promised to hold all parties responsible for the “tragic and shocking death” of Mrs Folajimi, a pregnant woman who was refused by a private hospital in Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki Area of Lagos State.

According to reports, the private hospital institution she sought assistance from refused to provide emergency care owing to a lack of financial deposit, putting her and her pregnant child in danger.

In a rapid response, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, started an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death on Saturday in Ikeja.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has formed a special panel to investigate the problem, uncover violations of medical standards, and establish the level of negligence involved.

According to Abayomi, preliminary indications indicate that the incident involved both a traditional birth attendant and a private hospital, and interviews with important individuals are currently underway.

He stated that the investigation would focus on whether the medical facility and birth attendant were officially registered with HEFAMAA, if they followed recognised medical practices, and if emergency procedures were followed.

The administration has committed to taking prompt action against any individuals or institutions proven guilty.

Abayomi emphasised the significance of all healthcare facilities, whether public or private, scrupulously following HEFAMAA requirements, including routine inspections and accreditation.

“The government has urged the public to report any healthcare facility not properly registered or operating outside its capacity.

“We are intensifying oversight to ensure healthcare establishments uphold the highest standards of care,” he stated.

Abayomi called on community leaders, religious groups, and healthcare professionals to unite in promoting better maternal and child health and to prevent future tragedies.

“We are committed to seeking justice for Mrs Folajimi and her family,” he maintained.
