Paul Chukwuma, a governorship aspirant on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform in Anambra state, has resigned from the party.

He has also withdrawn from the primary election slated for April 5, 2025.

Chukwuma announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC chairman of ward 2, Umueri, in Anambra East LGA.

The politician did not state the reason for his resignation, or his next political move, but said he remains committed to the ideals of the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I write to formally tender my resignation as a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress,” the letter reads.

“Rest assured of my support to our shared progressive ideas as I will devote more time to pursuing the realisation of a safe and prosperous Anambra State of our dream.”

Chukwuma becomes the second APC aspirant to withdraw from the governorship race.

Chukwuma Umeoji, a former member of the house of representatives, announced his withdrawal on Friday, citing consultations with his supporters across the state.

The national leadership of the APC had cleared seven aspirants to participate in the primary.

With Chukwuma and Umeoji’s withdrawal, the aspirants remaining in the race on the party’s platform are Nicholas Ukachukwu, another former federal lawmaker; and Valentine Ozigbo, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2021 governorship election.

Others are Obiora Okonkwo, Johnbosco Onunkwo and Edozie Madu.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the Anambra governorship election for November 8.

The APC had adopted an indirect primary method to select the party’s flagbearer.

Ajibola Basiru, the APC national secretary, said indirect primary was adopted to ensure a more inclusive and streamlined process.
