Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was greeted enthusiastically by supporters in Kogi State on Tuesday, despite the government’s ban on rallies and public gatherings.

Supporters from Kogi Central’s five local government areas arrived early in Ihima, Okehi LGA, to greet the besieged PDP legislator.

She landed in a white chopper amid music and jubilation, eliciting applause from the crowd.

Addressing the crowd, Akpoti-Uduaghan denied the government’s restrictions, claiming she was only enjoying Sallah with her supporters.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said, “Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed.

“I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, This is not political season; this is not campaign time.”

Natasha added, “We are not having a rally. This is just me, the senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that.

“I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.”

The Okehi LGA chairman imposed a curfew, and police issued warnings for her return home.

Natasha had previously accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Governor Yahaya Bello of being behind security threats against her rally.

The senator, who was recently suspended due to a sexual harassment scandal involving Akpabio, claims she is being persecuted for political reasons.
