The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a disciplinary inquiry to a student nurse, Osato Edobor, for allegedly recording and sharing an “unauthorised” video on social media during Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Delta State.

Oseni Rufai, an Arise New journalist, uploaded a picture of a letter addressed to Edobor on Friday via X.

The letter, signed by the institution’s provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, accused Edobor of committing a “malicious act” by recording herself singing and publishing an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s entrance at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.

The ceremony was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, which provided 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone.

“This is a punishable offence as enshrined in the Student Handbook under standardised disciplinary action for some punishable offences No. 8, Page 21,” the letter stated.

The school ordered Edobor to give a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours, stating why no disciplinary action should be taken against her.

The disciplinary action comes after a viral video surfaced on social media in which nursing students at the occasion appeared to reject the First Lady as their “mother”.

The incident occurred when the event’s Master of Ceremonies sang Oluremi Tinubu as “everyone’s mother”, a customary term for Nigerian First Ladies.

However, the pupils responded in unison, “Na your mama be this,” which means “This is your mother,” and refused to accept the classification.

The video has now elicited numerous reactions, with many attributing the students’ reaction to rising displeasure with the country’s economic hardship and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

Rising inflation, food scarcity, and high living expenses have fuelled frustration among Nigerians, particularly young people.

During the event, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori complimented the First Lady’s efforts, adding that the RHI programme was bringing major changes to the country’s health sector.

He also lauded her efforts to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The First Lady also visited with traditional rulers in the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, including the Orodje of Okpe and retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.
