The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arraigned Abubakar Aseku, an assistant superintendent with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), for allegedly receiving salaries from two other government agencies while still in active service of the NIS.

ICPC reaveled that Aseku fraudulently earned N4.2 million from the Nasarawa state ministry of education, science, and technology in 2015 while working as a school teacher, despite being on the payroll of the immigration service.

The commission also alleged that between 2018 and 2019, he received an additional N13.4 million in salaries from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) while still employed by the NIS.

The ICPC added that while serving as a pay officer with the immigration service, Aseku facilitated the payment of N4.7 million in salaries to seven individuals who were neither employees of the NIS nor on its payroll.

He was arraigned on Tuesday before Binta Dogonyaro, judge of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court in Apo, on a nine-count charge bordering on abuse of office and corruption.

Aseku pleaded not guilty to all charges. His counsel, Basil Hemba, prayed the court to uphold the bail conditions previously granted to his client by another FCT high court in Maitama.

Dogonyaro agreed and maintained the earlier bail terms.

Following the plea, ICPC counsel, Michael Adesola, requested an adjournment to allow the prosecution to present its witnesses.

The court adjourned the matter until April 29, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
