A 34-year-old Nigerian man, Quham Babatunde, was stabbed to death by a gang of suspected thugs on South Anne Street in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday.

The Daily Mail UK claimed on Wednesday that he had attended an Afroswing concert at a nightclub in Dublin on the night of the incident.

According to the British media site, emergency responders treated him at the scene on South Anne Street early Saturday morning.

He was, however, taken to St. James’ Hospital, where physicians attempted to save his life, but he died from multiple knife wounds, including one to his heart.

According to the report, social media video footage showed a masked man carrying a huge knife as a scuffle broke out on South Anne Street, just off Grafton Street.

A murder investigation has been initiated, with two suspects arrested and being questioned by police.

Meanwhile, Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called the event “disgusting and unacceptable.”

Babatunde lived in the International Protection Accommodation Service Centre in Ballyogan, South Dublin.

The Nigerian was previously detained by Italian officials in 2018 on charges of rape and was supposed to be deported in 2019.

Babatunde, also known as ‘Mike Obumbo,’ was a promising footballer who played for the Reggiana youth team at the time he was charged with rape, according to Gript, an Italian internet media organization.

In addition to the rape allegation, he was reported for illegal immigration. He was then taken under the custody of immigration agents.

The Irish Mirror also said that Babatunde’s pals revealed that the former footballer had previously been accused of rape in Italy, but that they believed he was innocent of the charges.
