Manchester United delivered a spirited performance to secure a 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield, ending a turbulent festive period on a positive note.

The result marked United’s first league goal at the iconic stadium in six years and stretched Liverpool’s unbeaten home record against their rivals to 14 matches.

United’s struggles at Anfield in recent years were evident, having failed to win in their previous eight league visits, their worst run since 1979. However, Ruben Amorim’s side showed resilience from the outset.

Liverpool dominated early chances, with Luis Díaz and Alexis Mac Allister testing United goalkeeper André Onana, but the Red Devils grew into the contest, creating openings of their own. Amad Diallo missed a promising header from Diogo Dalot’s cross, while Rasmus Højlund’s one-on-one effort was smothered by Alisson just before halftime.

After the break, United seized the initiative and struck first. Lisandro Martinez intercepted a loose pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and combined with Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a superb strike into the top corner.

Liverpool responded swiftly, with Cody Gakpo cutting inside Matthijs de Ligt and curling an equalizer past Onana.

The game swung further in Liverpool’s favor just after the hour mark when De Ligt was penalized for a handball in the box. Mohamed Salah converted the resulting penalty, despite Onana getting a hand to the shot, putting Liverpool ahead.

Amorim introduced Alejandro Garnacho, whose immediate impact helped United draw level. The Argentine winger burst down the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross for Diallo to sweep home, restoring parity.

Both sides pressed for a winner in a frantic final phase, with chances falling at both ends. Onana and Alisson were called into action to deny potential match-winning goals, but neither team could find the decisive breakthrough.

The result leaves Liverpool frustrated despite maintaining their slim lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

However, they can take solace in their continued dominance over Manchester United in recent years, suffering just one defeat in their last 14 league meetings.

For United, the draw offers a morale boost, demonstrating their ability to compete with the league’s top side despite a challenging season.
