APC slams Makinde over 2027 ambition, calls it ‘a disservice to Oyo people’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of prioritizing his political aspirations over governance in Oyo State.

In a press statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party accused Makinde of “reckless executive flippancy” and described his alleged 2027 ambition as “a disservice to the good people of Oyo State.”

The statement comes after Makinde reportedly blamed the APC for internal issues within his own People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and emphasized his commitment to strengthening the PDP in the Southwest.

“Governor Seyi Makinde has become the leading but rather shoddy drummer for his 2027 political ambition,” Morka said in the statement.

“While our democracy affords Makinde the liberty to his political aspiration, however, engaging in reckless executive flippancy, at the expense of the job he was elected to do as Governor, is a disservice to the good people of Oyo State.” he continued.

Morka further criticized Makinde for blaming the APC rather than addressing what he called “the implosion and decay” within the PDP.

“Like the proverbial bad workman that blames his tools, Makinde and his co-confused leaders of the PDP should quit pointing fingers at the APC and take full responsibility for their disgraceful failure to handle the party’s implosion and decay,” Morka added.

The APC statement praised the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting progress in Nigeria’s trade balance, foreign reserves, and infrastructure.

“Our country is now exporting more than we are importing with a trade surplus of nearly N7 billion at the end of Q2 of 2024,” the statement read. It cited improved economic indicators, including a growth rate of 3.19%, a reduced debt service ratio, and increasing foreign reserves.

Morka contended that Makinde’s focus on his “unhinged 2027 ambition” was a diversion from the challenges facing Oyo State residents. “Makinde must know that Nigeria’s scale and complexities demand more than his vain and self-indulgent ambition,” Morka asserted, adding, “Makinde cannot even speak for the people of Oyo state regarding their future electoral choices or decisions let alone speak for Nigerians.”

The APC concluded by urging Nigerians to support Tinubu’s administration, pointing to ongoing reforms as a path toward economic prosperity.

“We urge Nigerians to continue to stand firm in support of President Tinubu as the administration’s reform policies begin to yield the desired benefits for all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.

Governor Makinde has not yet issued a response to these criticisms from the APC.
