The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to the former Head of the Rapid Response Team, Abba Kyari, after 18 months in prison custody for refusing to escape Kuje Prison when it was attacked on July 5, 2022.

Abba Kyari, a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory after 27 months of confinement.

He was incarcerated after being arrested on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged involvement in an international drug gang.

He, along with four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team—Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu were charged on March 7, 2022.

The suspended police officer and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, but Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted.

Despite many applications, the former Deputy Commissioner of Police’s bail applications were consistently denied until a recent decision by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

On May 22, 2024, Judge Emeka Nwite granted the suspended police officer bail so that he may complete the burial ceremonies for his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who died on May 5.

His bail requirements included depositing his passport with the court and reporting to the nearest NDLEA office during the bail period.

The court set May 31, 2024, as the hearing date for Kyari’s main bail application regarding the narcotics trafficking charges.

Giving an update, Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service of the Federal Capital Territory Command, confirmed to our correspondent on Friday night that the suspended police officer met his bail conditions and was released on Friday.

Duza said, “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions and has since been released today.”
