The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has lamented the shortage of manpower in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), saying an officer does the job of two.

Egbetokun said this in Ilọrin Friday during a one-day official visit to the Kwara State Command.

“A policeman would close from night duty and resume for the morning. And as he is closing the morning shift, he is resuming night duty. yet when he dozes off in public, his photograph is taken and posted on social media to ridicule him,” he said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the annual increment in personnel recruitment into the force to address the shortage of manpower, he said.

“We are making efforts to increase your strength. The president had recently given approval for an increase in the yearly recruitment of officers.

“That’s the way forward. We need to double the strength of the men in the country. We cannot do it overnight, but gradually. And gradually, we will get there,” he said.

The IGP cautioned officers, calling for the removal of police officers from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

“The issue of pensions has been a source of concern to all of you, but we have plans and programmes to improve it,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the state commissioner of police, Victor Olaiya, requested the supply of an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) from the IGP to further enhance the security of banks and improve crime fighting capacity in the state.
