Healthcare workers affiliated with the Joint Health Sector Unions and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives have announced their intention to join the Nigeria Labour Congress strike, which is set to begin on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
The National Labour Council has planned a nationwide revolt to begin next Wednesday.
Though a court order prohibiting the congress from striking in June remains in place, our reporter learned that the congress stated that it could not fold its arms while Nigerians continued to endure the consequences of subsidy withdrawal, which has caused tremendous suffering.
Dr. Obinna Ogbonna, National Vice Chairman of JOHESU, stated that health workers were feeling the strain of economic hardship and were in need of a better living, reports said.
“All the trade unions are one affiliate or the other of the Trade Union Congress and the NLC, so if the two of them unanimously agree on the strike, that means the unions in the health sector, academics, private industry, and other industries will be involved,” Dr. Ogbonna stated.
“If we have to go on revolt, it will be extremely dangerous.” Because it is an affiliate of the NLC, NANNM will also join the strike.”
Ogbonna, on the other hand, cautioned against miscreants hijacking the planned revolt.
Meanwhile, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, President of the Nigerian Medical Association, has stated that physicians in the country will not participate in the NLC’s scheduled strike.
“We are not members of the NLC, so we will not join the strike,” Ojinmah explained.
