On Monday, the Federal Government announced that Nigeria had its first incidence of anthrax disease, which was discovered in a mixed livestock farm in Niger State.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development acknowledged the news in a statement signed by Nigeria’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Columba Vakuru.

Here are some important facts about anthrax disease.

    • Nigeria records first case of Anthrax

    1. Anthrax is caused by a naturally occurring bacterium called Bacillus anthracis. It can remain undetected for years.

    2. Anthrax spreads by spores. When veterinarians, agricultural workers, livestock producers, hunters, and butchers come into touch with diseased animals or contaminated animal products, they are at significant risk.

    3. Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing anthrax in animals.

    4. Always offer your animals the greatest care possible.

    5. Maintain access control over your facility by limiting animal movement, restricting farm access, and cleaning equipment before and after use.

    6. Do not slaughter sick animals. Instead, keep such animals isolated and consult your veterinarian for adequate care.

    7. Seek medical assistance promptly if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of Anthrax disease.

8.The following are the most prevalent kinds of anthrax: Cutaneous anthrax is an illness in which germs enter the body through a skin cut or sore. Gastrointestinal anthrax: an infection caused by eating undercooked meat from an infected animal. Inhalation (pulmonary) anthrax: Anthrax infection occurs when a patient inhales anthrax spores.

    9. Before slaughter, inspect each animal that will be killed for consumption or sale for any signs of sickness.

    10. In the instance of a suspected case, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development or the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention should be your first point of contact.
