Four US Embassy personnel in Nigeria were assassinated in Anambra State’s Ogbaru Local Government Area. According to reports, they came under fire while traveling through the neighborhood.

According to news report, they were on a humanitarian mission to the area, while another said the assaulted officials wanted to get to their destination via Ogbaru.

“At least four persons were killed in the attack while others sustained injuries. Troops have taken over the community”.

The attack’s specifics were sketchy at the time of filing this report however, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, affirmed the occurrence of the gruesome murder to Newsmen.

He said “Following the information of the shooting incident within Ogbaru community, the Commissioner of Police CP Echeng Echeng has deployed a police team led by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations to arrest the situation”.

Commenting on the issue, The US mission in Nigeria acknowledged the happenings, saying US employees were coordinating with Nigerian security authorities to get to the bottom of the situation.

“We confirm there was an incident on May 16 in Anambra state.  United States Mission Nigeria personnel are working with Nigerian security services to investigate. The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field.  We have no further comment at this time,” the Mission spokesperson said.

Anambra State which until hitherto is known for peace is one of the South Eastern states that has experienced a surge in violence in recent years.

Security forces have blamed the attacks on the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and its subset group, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), although the group has frequently disputed the charge.

According to the Daily Trust, many lives have been lost and properties destroyed as a result of the murderous organizations operating as gunmen perpetuating violence in Anambra.
