Between January and March, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State announced it had convicted 37 drug peddlers and users.

Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the Agency’s State Commander, told media reporters in Kano on Monday that the command detained 352 individuals during the time.

He said that, in addition to the 37 convicted by the Federal High Court, the command has filed 39 new cases, with 127 others still pending.

He said that 955.304kg of cannabis sativa, 1,225.05kg of codeine and tramadol, 25 grammes of cocaine, 17 grammes of heroine, and 52 grammes of methamphetamine were seized between January and March.

“We have made good progress in our narcotics demand reduction efforts, with 5,060 people sensitised on the dangers of narcotics abuse, including secondary and tertiary students, traders’ associations, vigilante groups, and political thugs, among others.”

“We have also conducted a series of educational programmes on the War on narcotics Abuse among youths, women, and others,” Idris-Ahmad said.

He urged locals to provide the agency with information on drug traffickers’ activity in their neighbourhoods.

He also urged the general public, parents, and community leaders to be watchdogs for their children in order to combat the threat of drug trafficking and abuse.

“The agency will not back down in its fight against narcotics abuse and trafficking.”

“We will continue to move throughout the state to ensure a drug-free society,” Idris-Ahmad added.
