The 24 schoolgirls kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, have been rescued.
Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser for Information and Strategy, confirmed this in a statement made on Tuesday.
He stated that the president congratulated security services for their efforts in gaining the victims’ freedom and urged them to step up operations to rescue students who are still in captivity.
“I am relieved that all 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must urgently deploy more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to prevent further kidnappings. My government will provide all necessary support to achieve this,” the statement quoted the president as saying.
Chronicle NG reported that bandits stormed the Kebbi school hostel last Monday, abducting 24 female students.
The kidnap sparked national outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of schools in rural areas, especially in the Northwest, where banditry remains widespread.
