Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will headline a major national political summit in Abuja next week, as Nigeria gears up for sweeping electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The “National Electoral Reforms Summit for Credible Elections in 2027,” scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, is being organised by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) in partnership with political and civil society groups. Jonathan is billed to chair the event, with Osinbajo delivering the keynote address.

According to a statement signed by Comrade James Ezema, Publicity Manager of the summit, the gathering—initially focused on electoral and constitutional reforms—has been expanded to address the fallout from recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who described Nigeria as a “disgraced country” while hinting at possible military action over insecurity and instability.

Ezema said Trump’s comments had “galvanised national leaders to turn anxiety into positive national action,” describing the summit as “a bold and urgent turning point for Nigeria’s democratic future.”

Among the eminent Nigerians expected are former INEC chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, human rights lawyers Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) and Femi Falana (SAN), former Minister Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, political reform advocate Dr. Usman Bugaje, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, Senator Shehu Sani, and Prof. Pat Utomi.

The multi-stakeholder summit will also feature a special panel of presidential aspirants, former national leaders, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) members, and civil society representatives.

Organisers say the objective is to build national consensus around constitutional amendments that will ensure credible result transmission, prevent electoral violence, strengthen institutions, and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s elections.

“As 2027 approaches, Nigeria must rise above discredited electoral processes, disputed results, weak institutions, and recurrent violence,” the statement stressed.

Civil society leaders involved in the preparations urged Nigerians to treat Trump’s remarks not as an insult, but as a wake-up call to rebuild political integrity and credibility from within. Diplomatic envoys of friendly nations are also being invited to attend the opening session as a show of solidarity with Nigeria’s reform agenda.
