Kayode Ojo has been remanded in prison by an Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Odigbo, Odigbo Local Government Area, for attempting to commit suicide inside a police cell.
The defendant had previously been arrested by men from the state police command for attempting suicide. He was accused of attempting to swallow a hazardous liquid substance while inside the confinement.
The police arraigned him in court on one count of attempted murder.
According to Mr. James Usifo, the police prosecutor, the offence committed violates Section 327 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
Usifo told the court that the defendant attempted suicide while in police custody by ingesting a deadly liquid presumed to be a disinfectant. He was previously arrested for another offence and kept in a police cell, where he allegedly attempted suicide.
Ojo, the defendant, pleaded guilty to the charge.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate D. O. Ogunfuyi remanded the defendant to the Okitipupa Correctional Centre and postponed the case till October 10, 2023, for fact and sentencing.
