Reigning champions the USA are out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after being beaten by Sweden on penalties.
The USA, who won the last two tournaments, dominated the 120 minutes but were thwarted by the inspired form of Zecira Musovic, although they were perhaps guilty of being a bit wasteful in the final third, which saw the match end in a goalless draw and even at the end of extra time.
Rapinoe’s miss, Vlatko Andonovski’s team was in command of the penalty shootout, and even Smith had a chance to put them through.
Lina Hurtig scored the final penalty in the shootout after USA goalie Alyssa Naeher narrowly failed to stop the ball from crossing the line.
Sweden goes through to face Japan in the quarterfinals.
