The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about a potentially harmful cough syrup that is on the market.
Fraken Group is said to create the ‘Naturcold’ cough medication.
According to sources, the syrup is responsible for the deaths of six children under the age of five at a health institution in the health district of Fundong, in Cameroon’s North-West region.
The children’s kidney function decreased after using the cough syrup, according to the North-West Regional of Cameroon’s delegate for Public Health.
NAFDAC revealed this in a recent press release.
According to the Agency, the product is not allowed for sale in Cameroon and was obtained through unlicensed sources.
“Although the product is not in the NAFDAC database, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the substandard (contaminated) syrups,” the agency said.
