Adamu Ciroma, 84, has died after a brief illness

Former Finance Minister and elder statesman Adamu Ciroma has died in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Thursday after an unidentified illness.

Adamu who is a founding member of Nigeria’s main opposition party People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was also a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He served as Minister of Finance in the government of Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003 and is married to Maryam Ciroma who currently holds the position of PDP National Women leader in Nigeria.

He was 84 years old at the time of his passing. Family sources said he died after a protracted illness.
