The competition served as season curtain raiser in Belgium.

“I feel very happy and excited with the victory. This is my first professional trophy, it means a lot to me, it’s something I have been waiting for, it’s worth celebrating,” a proud Onyekuru told SCORENigeria

“I dedicate the medal and trophy to God.”

The Nigeria international came off the bench in the 65th minute and showed class when he came close to increase the tally for the Belgian champions late in the final.

On his effort at goal which came off the goal post, Onyekuru said: “I thought the ball was going inside the net, but I was denied by the goal post.

“I hope for better luck next time.”

The new Belgian league season will begin next weekend with 34-time champions Anderlecht away at newly promoted Antwerp on Friday.
